TRJ Family Camp

Answers to common questions about attending camp.

Send an email to any of the following and we will do our best to respond in a timely manner:

While TRJ works to keep camp affordable, some families may need additional assistance. Some families turn to local post-adoption resources such as adoption agencies, community-based therapeutic services, government agencies, corporate scholarships, or support from friends and family. For state-based resources, check AdoptUSKids.

We encourage families to come with children of all ages. While programmed activities begin with preschool-aged children, even very young children benefit from early bonds with families that look like theirs. Parents also benefit from connecting with others who share concerns about raising adopted children of color in a race-conscious society—there is no better time to start those conversations than early in your parenting journey.

We welcome all families with at least one child adopted transracially (international or domestic, public or private). Because we are a small camp with limited resources, our programming focus is on families raising Black (including biracial) children. We aim to be inclusive and support children and parents in age-appropriate exploration of identity, adoption, and race.

We welcome all siblings, whether adopted or not. It can be especially valuable for biological siblings to participate fully with their age group—learning first-hand what it can feel like for an adopted sibling who is often in a racial minority. Programming supports children exploring race and identity, learning about privilege in age-appropriate ways, and developing tools to be an ally.

No. There is no option to attend for only part of the weekend or stay elsewhere overnight. Camp is a full-immersion experience, and continuity is important for community-building and peer connections. Families must attend for the full three nights.

Yes. Ohio University embraces diversity and inclusion, and TRJ’s philosophy is rooted in tolerance and inclusion. We welcome families regardless of race/ethnicity, marital status, age, gender expression, sexual orientation, religion, or national origin.

No. Only registered campers may attend. We encourage additional adult family members to register and attend (discounted rates may apply for families bringing more than two adults).

Camping is not an option at Ohio University.

Nursery/PreK staff will make every effort to comfort your child and create a fun, safe environment. If a child is unable to adjust, parents may need to stay until they feel comfortable. If your child needs an afternoon nap, you may need to skip the afternoon parent session to support rest.

Nursery spaces are limited to ensure a safe and comfortable environment. Once full, families may be placed on a waiting list for cancellations. Registrations for families with toddlers (3 and under) are not accepted once the nursery is full—even if a parent is willing to skip parent sessions.

Teen groups are offered depending on sign-ups, and we plan to continue. We are developing new teen programming, including more outdoor activity options. Camp provides a supportive space for healthy independence and meaningful friendships.

Counselors vary in age, experience, and professional background, and provide positive role models and engaging leadership. We actively recruit teen and adult adoptees with lived experience in transracial adoption. We also have social work support and staff with education experience. All share a commitment to the mission and to creating a fun, caring, and safe atmosphere.

Yes. Older teenagers who have attended camp at least one year can apply to be counselors-in-training. Exceptions may be made for mature younger teens who have attended multiple years. All CITs must attend camp with a registered parent.

TRJ Family Camp is not a therapeutic camp and does not provide social services, but we strive to support families. Children focus on community, fun, and exploring race, adoption, and identity in safe, age-appropriate ways. We continue increasing trauma-informed support. Parents may be called to support children who need breaks or additional help during activities.

Year-Round Family Program

Answers to common questions about the year-round program.

Registration can be completed through the website via the Zoom registration link in the launch announcement. Monthly, quarterly, and annual options are available.

Yes. Monthly, quarterly, and annual options cover the entire household, including adopted and non-adopted children. Parents and caregivers are welcomed to join parent sessions, and the whole family can join family sessions (including siblings).

Yes. Parent & Caregiver Sessions are adult-only and open to primary parents plus any adult caregiver the parent chooses to invite (grandparents, aunts/uncles, godparents, close family friends, etc.).

The year-round program helps deepen learning, share solutions, and maintain connection with the TRJ community and expert team between camps—supporting a consistent family rhythm throughout the year.

Sessions introduce core TRJ content, community, and experts. It’s an accessible way to build connection and skills alongside experienced adoptive families.

Camp is an immersive, multi-day, in-person experience. The Year-Round Program is a monthly, virtual commitment that provides ongoing support, skill-building, and a consistent community rhythm.

Each session (Parent & Caregiver and All-Family) is 60 minutes long: 7:30–8:30 PM ET on the second Wednesday of each month.

Portions of sessions will be recorded and shared with registered participants (excluding confidential Q&A and breakouts), along with take-home materials.

Yes—the content portion is recorded and shared with registrants. Interactive Q&A and confidential small-group breakouts are not recorded to protect privacy and maintain a safe space.

Parent & Caregiver Sessions are designed as confidential, supportive spaces. Participants are expected to maintain privacy and help foster an atmosphere for open sharing and reflection.

We encourage caregivers to minimize interruptions during Parent & Caregiver Sessions. Using headphones and participating from a quiet space can support the reflective and supportive environment.

All children in the household (adopted and non-adopted siblings) are welcome to attend quarterly All-Family Sessions, with activities and lessons designed for a variety of ages and stages.

Sessions are hosted via Zoom. You’ll need reliable internet, a microphone, and ideally a camera for active participation.

The first three months are free. Beginning in the second quarter, there will be a fee. More details will be shared as available, and TRJ will work to keep fees reasonable. TRJ is a 501(c)(3) and strives to keep content and materials free or affordably priced.
